Installation procedure

Virtual Machine (e.g. VMWare) are only supported in the Full version of Monitor, not on evaluation versions.

Upgrading to a more recent version (it takes only a few minutes since only the code on the monitoring workstation has to be upgraded)

Make sure you are entitled to use a new version. Customers with a valid Maintenance contract can download and use new intermediate versions (E.g. 9.1 to 9.2). Major version upgrades (E.g. 8.3.1 to 9.0) are valid only with the Maintenance Plus contract covering Major upgrades. Unauthorized use of a new version will switch the software back to evaluation mode.

Hardware requirements

(Monitor installs itself on a workstation, preferably dedicated, not a Domino server)

Minimum Configuration(for evaluation):

Processor : Pentium IV at 1+ GHz
Memory: 512 MB
Disk Space: 800 MB page file 300 MB of free disk space
Screen: Color monitor with 1024x768x256 resolution

Recommended Configuration(for production)

Processor: Pentium IV at 2+ GHz
Memory: 512 MB, 1 GB for 100+ monitored servers or on Microsoft Vista, 1.5 GB of Ram if the GSX Analyzer module is installed on the same machine
Disk Space: 800 MB page file 300 MB of free disk space
Screen: Color monitor with 1024x768x256 or higher resolution

Software requirements

Monitoring workstation

Monitoring WorkstationOperating System: Windows NT 4.x with service pack 6 or later; Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista, 32 or 64 bit. Server, Advanced server, Workstation, Home or Professional editions can be used.
IBM Lotus Notes Client (only if Domino servers are monitored): Normal 0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Releases 5.x, 6.x, 6.5.x, 7.x, 8.x -- full client. Avoid running Monitor on top of a Domino server
Microsoft .Net Framework (requires IE) and Jet drivers: Normal 0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Starting with Monitor 7.5, the Microsoft .Net framework and Jet drivers are required. The GSX Monitor installation program installs them if necessary

Monitored servers

Domino nothing has to be installed on servers. All Domino server versions and platforms are supported (R3.x, R4.x, R5.x, R6.x, R6.5x, R7.x, R8.x on NT, Win 98/Me/NT4/2000/XP/2003, OS/2, Solaris, AIX, OS/390, AS/400, Linux, etc). GSX Monitor does NOT require the following Domino tasks to run on servers to collect statistics: stats, event, reporter, collector, iSpy. These tasks can be removed unless used for other purposes.
MS Exchange: any version from 5.5 to 2007
BlackBerry Enterprise Server: all versions from 2.x to 5.x on Domino, Exchange or GroupWise are supported. The Windows SNMP service is required.
Sametime: all server versions are supported.
URLs: all Web servers are supported. Authentication using a popup password window is supported, however, authentication forms are not.
Ports: all LDAP servers supported. LDAPS only supported on Domino and Active directory

Browser used to access Web Enabler applet:

Successfully tested on IE (up to V8) and Firefox (up to V3).
Warning: there's a known issue in the version 1.6.x of the Sun JRE, preventing the refresh of the Web Enabler configuration. Here's the Sun technote and the workaround: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6552954
This problem is fixed in version 1.7 of the Sun JRE ... but as of today it's still in Beta version ! :-/
CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
1) Open Java Control Panel
2) Go to Settings and turn off the option "Keep temporary files on my computer.".
3) Close the control pane and reload the applet in a new browser.

Web Server for running GSX Analyzer:

IE, Cassini (installed by default if IE is not used). Other Web Servers, such as Apache, can be linked then to Cassini in order to provide a higher level of security and additional options

Miscellaneous

GSX Monitor uses the following ports for monitoring servers:

Domin the Lotus Notes NRPC port, 1352. Also, a "Ping" command can be issued, using the ICMP protocol, in case the Domino server is down, in order to check network connectivity
BlackBerry Enterprise Server: SNMP port (161), and for direct access to the relational database, port 50000 by default for DB2 and 1433 for SQL/MSDE
Sametime: the same ports used by a Sametime client, by default 1533. The connectivity can be set in Monitor - Server Settings - Advanced column - Connection. Also scans the STLog.nsf database using the Notes port (1352)
URLs: port defined in the Browser on your machine (usually 80 or 8080 for Https)
LDAP: 389 or 662 with SSL are default port numbers
MoniPing: port defined in the Preferences - Advanced tab of Monitor and in MoniPing Preferences. By default 33333
MS Exchange, WMI port 445

Important Note:

GSX strongly recommends that once GSX Monitor is permanently deployed, it be installed on a dedicated workstation that is left running at all times and is not used for any other purpose. However, this workstation need not be very powerful. For evaluation purposes it is, of course, acceptable to run GSX monitor on a non-dedicated workstation.

Monitor 7.5 and higher do take advantage of powerful machines by heavily using parallel processing. Usage of Hyper-threading technology or bi-processor computers will therefore allow better performances and shorter scanning cycles.
